What does individual adult therapy look like?
Well! Meet May*. Depending on the day, May presented with feelings of anxiety and depression, rarely feeling anything in the middle. May also had nightmares and struggled to feel calm unless she was alone and had a TV or music running in the background. She needed constant distraction.
When she came to my office—searching, perhaps, for “individual therapy near me” or a local solution—May appeared nervous, looking around a lot and not making eye contact. She struggled with trusting anyone for most of her life. Her mother passed away when May was a child, and her father raised her. He was not the most accessible man to get along with, and if she kept her head down, she could survive most days without a snarky comment or being yelled at.
As May sat in my office, she clarified that she was nervous. Within 20 minutes, she couldn’t help but smile or laugh at my odd quirks. By the end of the session, May felt unsure but better about her individual therapy session. She listened to what I had to say about moving forward and anticipating what would happen in the next session.
Nervousness often accompanies the process.
On the second individual therapy session, May still felt nervous but more at ease with what therapy looked like.
May knew that she would have to hold those Thera Tappers things. I checked for how May felt during calm moments. She felt weird and stressed when holding the Thera Tappers as they sped up and slowed down. By the end of the session, I indicated to May that she appeared to struggle with feeling calm.
Therapy helped May learn how to feel calm.
Within about two to three months, May felt better and more confident about being in and feeling calm. She still struggles with feeling safe when certain people are around her, but she realizes she feels better overall.
When adapted to the calm, May learned coping skills to help her focus on feeling better when she was not in my office.
Resulting from individual therapy, May gained the ability to move forward by putting deep wounds in the past. She resolved to change and sought the help she needed, allowing her to find her authentic self.
